Tell us about your NYC Subway Horror Story:
My boyfriend and I were riding the A train from Central Park to Inwood- which is a LONG ride. It was seven days until Christmas, and it was rush hour. To say the car was crowded would be an understatement. New passengers weren’t boarding because there appeared to be no more room. At least it was an express train.
People were packed in, jostling each other, knocking into each other’s packages, but hey, that’s part of riding public transit, no? You just deal with the proximity. We were standing near the doors, trying to stand our ground.
About 10 minutes into our 30 minute ride, someone seated to our left, began to gag. Gagging quickly became vomiting, and the vomiting was loud, long, and very, very smelly. The splash of it hitting the train floor was enough to have some people looking green around the gills. If people had felt close to their fellow passengers before, let me tell you- nothing brings people closer together (literally) than trying to avoid another stranger’s vomit on their shoes. I didn’t think it was possible to find that much available space on that subway car. Suddenly, being on an express train didn’t feel like such a blessing.
When the train finally stopped, most people exited, including our friend who had been celebrating a bit early. I don’t know if people had reached their stop, or were just trying to distance themselves from someone’s bodily fluids, but the car emptied. We had a seat and rode until the end of the line.
